The Midwives’ Association of Washington State (MAWS) is the professional home for Licensed Midwives, Certified Professional Midwives, and allies committed to preserving and advancing the art and science of midwifery.
Since its founding in 1983, MAWS has stood as a voice for midwives in Washington and across the United States, ensuring their place at the table where decisions about birth and healthcare are made. Growing in equity, representation, and systemic transformation, MAWS works to cultivate a diverse midwifery workforce and to lead in the work needed to ensure that every person and baby are provided care that centers dignity, safety, and joy.

We have been steadfast in our work to:
- Expand access to midwifery care and integrate community midwives into the broader perinatal care system.
- Address systemic barriers to practice, licensing, and equitable reimbursement.
- Advance birth equity and reproductive justice, centering the needs and leadership of those most impacted by disparities.
- Support midwives through clinical resources, professional development, and advocacy at the state and local levels.
We are in a period of exciting growth and transformation. Reimagining how we serve our members, how we show up for birthing families, and how we build the future of midwifery in Washington, which has always set a tone for what is happening nationally. The Board of Directors will play a vital role in shaping that vision, strengthening our strategies, and supporting new leadership as we move forward.
