Apply to the MAWS Board of Directors

The Midwives’ Association of Washington State (MAWS) is inviting nominations for new members to join our Board of Directors.

We are looking for midwives and community members. Whether you are nominating yourself or someone else, we encourage you to step forward to nurture the next chapter of your association in its exciting growth.

If nominating another midwife, please be sure they are interested and able to meet the expectations of board service before submitting their name. Nominations for the annual election in December must be received by November 1st of each year.
The Midwives’ Association of Washington State (MAWS) is the professional home for Licensed Midwives, Certified Professional Midwives, and allies committed to preserving and advancing the art and science of midwifery.

Since its founding in 1983, MAWS has stood as a voice for midwives in Washington and across the United States, ensuring their place at the table where decisions about birth and healthcare are made. Growing in equity, representation, and systemic transformation, MAWS works to cultivate a diverse midwifery workforce and to lead in the work needed to ensure that every person and baby are provided care that centers dignity, safety, and joy.
We have been steadfast in our work to:
  • Expand access to midwifery care and integrate community midwives into the broader perinatal care system.
  • Address systemic barriers to practice, licensing, and equitable reimbursement.
  • Advance birth equity and reproductive justice, centering the needs and leadership of those most impacted by disparities.
  • Support midwives through clinical resources, professional development, and advocacy at the state and local levels.
We are in a period of exciting growth and transformation. Reimagining how we serve our members, how we show up for birthing families, and how we build the future of midwifery in Washington, which has always set a tone for what is happening nationally. The Board of Directors will play a vital role in shaping that vision, strengthening our strategies, and supporting new leadership as we move forward.
Nominee Requirements
To qualify for consideration, nominees must:
  • Be a Licensed Midwife or Certified Professional Midwife (for midwife seats) and a current member of MAWS.
  • Attest to alignment with MAWS’ values and commitments.
  • Commit to meeting the expectations of Board service.
  • Have experience, study, or personal development related to dismantling racism and colonial systems prior to election. At MAWS, we believe that birth equity and reproductive justice must be centered in everything we do and we ask that our leaders share this commitment.
Board Member Expectations
  • Participate in two full-day Leadership Team meetings each year (fall and spring).
  • Contribute approximately 2–6 hours per week to board work.
  • Support fundraising, outreach, and membership growth to ensure MAWS’ sustainability and impact.
  • Engage in MAWS’ ongoing equity and anti-racism work, including structured conversations and trainings as part of board service.
Nomination Process

You may nominate yourself or another midwife. If nominating someone else, please confirm their interest and capacity before submitting. Nominations for the annual election must be received by November 1st of each year in time for the December annual meeting and elections.

Submit your nomination today.

Land Acknowledgement
MAWS acknowledges that we live and work on the unceded ancestral lands of the Coast Salish tribes and pay our respects to all of the ancestral homelands and traditional territories of Indigenous peoples who have been here since time immemorial. We recognize that this land touches on the shared waters of tribes and bands within the Duwamish, Puyallup, Suquamish, Tulalip and Muckleshoot nations. We recognize we are grateful to be guests in these lands and commit to show solidarity for the continued fight for Indigenous sovereignty.
